NEW LOBBY GROUP ANNOUNCES FORMATION, FIRM MEMBERS
AUSTIN – Capitol Strategy Associates, a bipartisan government consulting firm, has announced its formation and the names of its legislative team including members with extensive knowledge of politics, legislative and judicial affairs, and state agencies.
The group includes political consultant Steve Ray, retired Appeals Court Justice Rose Vela, longtime lobbyist Chuck Rice and businessman Raymond Wetegrove. Todd A. Hunter Jr. will serve as counsel to the group.
Steve Ray is a political consultant who has represented state and federal Republican candidates including State Representatives Todd Hunter and J.M. Lozano, U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, and county and local officials throughout Texas. A graduate of Southern Nazarene University, Mr. Ray is managing member for Capitol Strategy. He is a former capitol bureau chief for Harte-Hanks and Scripps newspapers and served as Deputy Executive Director for Information and Planning at the Texas Department of Economic Development before leaving to start his own communications and political consulting firm.
A retired district judge, Rose Vela made history in 2006 when she became the first Republican elected to the 13th Court of Appeals in South Texas. A native of San Antonio, she graduated from Southwest Texas State University and then received her law degree from St. Mary University’s School of Law. She is married to U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, a Democratic Congressman from Brownsville, who is beginning his third term representing Texas District 34 in the U.S. Congress. Ms. Vela will be working with state legislators on issues, but will not lobby on federal issues.
Chuck Rice has been working in the government sector for nearly 40 years, from serving on the staffs of several Republican State Representatives to the staff of State Senator Chet Brooks to lobbying on behalf of various companies and business interests. He is a graduate of Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University) in San Marcos. Additionally, Mr. Rice worked at different state agencies and trade and business associations.
Raymond F. Wetegrove, a lifelong Texan with extensive experience in business, investments, and community service will serve as Business Development director for Capitol Strategy Associates. Mr. Wetegrove, a 1978 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin began his career at Texas Commerce Bank in Houston as a commercial credit analyst. He subsequently worked as a stockbroker, beginning with Rotan Mosle in January 1980. He retired from Smith Barney-Citigroup as a Senior Vice President in August 2007 to focus on his family partnership investments, some of which include real estate, banking, insurance, healthcare, ecotourism, oil and gas infrastructure, renewable energy, farming, as well as private equity.
TODD A. HUNTER JR.:
Todd A. Hunter Jr. will serve as counsel to Capitol Strategy Associates. An attorney based in Corpus Christi, Mr. Hunter graduated from Texas A&M University – College Station with a degree in finance before getting his law degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
